Wellspring utilizes a curriculum called Kumon, which includes both a math and reading component. Students come to our center two times a week after school for an hour at a time, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, and the program runs year-round. This curriculum is highly structured and has been proven to not only help young people catch up to grade level but in many cases advance to levels beyond their school grade. In fact, we have consistently documented that, on average, our students advance 2 grade levels in math or reading skill per program year. Wellspring offers this program to predominantly low income families through the use of grants and other contributions.
For math a total number of 70 youth were enrolled during the 2008/2009 program year, with a total of 130 grade level increases documented, averaging 1.9 per student. For reading a total number of 17 youth were enrolled, with a total number of 41 grade level increases documented, averaging 2.4 per student.
Youth can participate in recreation once they have completed their academic work, as well as participate in periodic field trips.
