Mission

Wellspring’s mission is to assist urban youth in developing themselves spiritually, socially, academically, and economically. Our Christian identity leads us to provide human service programming to all regardless of religious interest or affiliation (such as with our Academic & Recreation Program), as well as to provide to interested youth the opportunity to engage in spiritual and moral development through Christian discipleship (such as with our Teen Discipleship Group).

History

Wellspring was founded in 1986 by Dan & Cherie Bandrowski and Marc & Jane Averill, and was originally part of a church ministry. In 1992 it was incorporated as a non-profit organization. We have operated out of a community center house in northwest Detroit since 1988, renovated and re-zoned by the city as a “youth tutoring and mentoring” facility.

Ministry Philosophy

Wellspring has been inspired by a philosophy of urban ministry called the 3 R’s of Christian Community Development.

Relocation refers to the value of living in the community in which one serves. Doing so fosters understanding and trust with the community. The principle of relocation is inspired by the incarnation of Jesus. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us”.

Reconciliation
seeks to break done barriers related to class and race and also has a vertical dimension in providing individuals the opportunity to enter into a relationship with God.

Redistribution refers to our responsibility and calling to share with under-resourced individuals and communities. Wellspring seeks to do this in ways that empower individuals with the skills to be able to provide for themselves and their families.

Wellspring is affiliated with the Christian Community Development Association.
